There is overwhelming evidence throughout the Bible that God uses signs to communicate with his people. Examples of their use can be seen from “Genesis to Revelations”. (Gen. 9:11-17; Exd. 3:11 & 12; Num. 14:11; Deut. 4:34 & 35; Jos. 4:5 & 6; Jdg. 6:17; 1Sam. 2:34; 2Ki. 19:29; Neh. 9:10; Psa. 78:43; Isa. 7:14; Jer. 10:2; Ezek. 4:3; Mat. 12:38 & 39; Mar. 13:4; Lk. 2:12; Jon. 2:11; Acts 2:19; Rom. 4:11; 1Cor. 1:22; 2Cor. 12:12; Heb. 2:4; Rev. 12:1) God has always utilized various supernatural phenomenons to reveal himself and to express his will.

We are not to, however, blindly except ever miraculous event or phenomena as a sign from God; (2Thes. 2:9-12; Rev. 13:12-14, 16:14, 19:20) don’t be deceived by the false signs of the enemy. (Mat. 24:24; 13:22) Signs wrought by the false prophet can lead away from God if not discerned and rejected by us. (Deut. 13:1-3) Signs don’t always attest to ones closeness to God or that he even knows them. (Mat. 7:22-24)

It is also true any discussion of signs instantly brings to mind astrology and zodiac signs. Let me assure you the use of signs in the Bible has nothing to do with zodiac signs or astrology, as instruments that shape our character or foretell events in our lives. The only references to the luminaries in this light are negative ones. (Lev. 19:26; Deut. 4:19, 17:2-5, 18:9-12; 2Chr. 33:5-7; Jer. 10:1-3) God uses miraculous signs to show his omnipotence that man might fear and escape his divine wrath. (Jos. 4:24; Jer. 16:20 & 21) God has always used the prophets and other men of God to convey his righteous and moral will not through the stars or any other heavenly body. (Heb. 1:1 & 2) God speaks to his prophets through visions and dreams not the stars. (Num. 12:6) The sun, moon and stars were created for light, seasons and instruments of navigation. (Gen. 1:14; Jer. 31:35; Psa. 104:19) We caution you, however do not become a seeker of signs.

Sign hunting shows a lack of faith in God and is not a commendable trait. Those who demand a continuous stream of signs from God are mired in unbelief. (Mar. 8:12; Lk. 11:29; Jon. 6:28-36; 1Cor. 1:22 & 23) Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and Sadducees when they ask of him a sign from heaven. He further states the sign that they should truly read are the signs of the time. (Mat. 16:1-4)

Yes, there will be signs in the heavens in the end times, (Lk. 21 7-28; Acts 2:19 & 20), but these are not the signs that we are to focus on. (Acts 1:7) Signs are important in our walk with God therefore we should learn how to read the signs. The Word of God is wondrously filled with warning signs that can be easily seen and read by his people. (1Tim. 4:1 & 2; 2Tim. 3:1-17) Without doubt the two aforementioned references reflect the time that we live in. They warn us of the things we must contend with in this age. So I say unto you read the signs and be spared the wrath of God. God has left the perfect trail for all to follow. Let us see if we can truly read the signs.

We shun the idea that all supernatural phenomena are of God. We nevertheless, know that God truly does perform miracles and uses signs to reveal himself and express his will in the lives of his people. Therefore we believe in signs and teach others to do the same.
